Is ECE really easy

Child seat classes: which child seat is suitable for which age?

Children up to 14 years of age who are shorter than 135 centimeters must be transported in a car in a suitable child seat. This applies to traveling in all passenger cars and it is not only the parents who are responsible for ensuring that they are properly secured, but in any case the driver of the car. Improper security can result in high penalties.

Former regulation: Until the end of 2018, a suitable seat was necessary to transport children up to 150 centimeters in height. This regulation has been changed to 135 centimeters - however, depending on the age and maturity of the child, it is advisable to use a child seat beyond that.

ECE standard groups

Yes, it can get confusing because there are currently three valid standards for child seats that can be used:

  • i-Size / UN ECE Reg. 129
  • UN ECE Reg. 44/04
  • UN ECE Reg. 44/03 (Seats in this standard group are no longer commercially available, but they may still be used.)

While the child seats, which conform to the UN ECE Reg. 44 standard, are divided into weight classes, child seats of the new i-Size standardization are categorized according to body size. The manufacturers themselves determine how tall a child can be for each seat.
