General

Itachi Uchiha (Itachi = weasel) is Sasuke Uchiha's older brother. He is a particularly talented shinobi from Konohagakure and became a genin at the age of seven. At eight he was already proficient in Sharingan. Itachi was made a chunin at the age of ten and was already a team leader in the ANBU units at the age of thirteen. Because of this, Itachi was the entire pride of the Uchiha clan until he exterminated his clan and only let his little brother Sasuke survive. But this was the order of the Konoha village elders, as they did not suspect that the Uchiha clan was attempting a coup against Konohagakure without grounded evidence. Itachi then left Konoha and became a member of Akatsuki so that he could continue to watch over his home village and Sasuke from the background.

childhood

Itachi was born into one of the most powerful clans of Konoha. But initially his childhood was not as good as that of other children. He grew up during the Third Shinobi World War and, when he was just four years old, had to see how many people around him died. These events marked him for all his life. His goal was to become a strong shinobi and prevent future wars. This was reflected in his achievements at the academy. He was always the best and showed great talents in the ninja arts from an early age. At the age of eight he finally awoke his Sharingan and was therefore considered a great talent in the Uchiha clan.

character

Itachi is always very calm and level-headed. His brother Sasuke adored him and looked up to him in every way. He admired him, wanted to learn from him, train with him and always emulate him. But Itachi behaved in an extremely contradictory manner towards Sasuke: He often rejected him when Sasuke asked for a training session. Itachi then brushed him off and put him off with "Maybe next time." Such answers shook Sasuke deeply, as he longed for love and recognition. In other situations, Itachi was the kind-hearted big brother, carried Sasuke piggyback, laughed with him, trained him and gave Sasuke the love he wanted. Most of the time, however, only to disappoint him again shortly afterwards, because he had something else in mind ...
In truth, Itachi only played this evil, disappointing side to Sasuke to arouse Sasuke's hatred of him. Itachi didn't want Sasuke to ever learn the truth about him, as Itachi played the renegade, murderous Uchiha, only to be ultimately killed by Sasuke to restore the honor of the Uchiha clan. Itachi loved his brother so much that he only spared him in the extermination of the clan, as he did not have the heart to kill him. Itachi even cried when he left Konoha and Sasuke because it hurt so much.
Itachi had seen many wars as a child. So he was traumatized and always wanted to avoid arguments. However, Kisame Hoshigaki sees him as a cruel person because he tortured his little brother without hesitation. Overall, in contrast to most of the other Akatsuki members, Itachi is rather calm and stays out of the way when the others argue about who is fighting whom.
Itachi only joined Akatsuki to protect the village from within.
Typical for Itachi is that he has almost always activated his Sharingan, even if it is not necessary at all. One reason for this could possibly be that his eyes are so damaged by the Mangekyou Sharingan that he can hardly see anything with his normal eyes.

plot

Extermination of the Uchiha clan

My foolish little brother. If you want to kill me, despise me, hate me, and lead a hideous life ...

Itachi to his little brother after the Uchiha clan was exterminated.

It started when Shisui Uchiha, Itachi's best friend, committed suicide in front of his eyes to prevent the Coup d'État. By Shisui's death, Itachi awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan and shortly before his death, Shisui gave Itachi his left eye, which Itachi placed in one of his crows. Later, many members of the Konoha Police Station accused Itachi of murdering Shisui because only those two were absent from a clan gathering. Itachi, furious with anger, attacked the policemen and, when his father ended the argument, stared at him hatefully with the Mangekyou Sharingan without his seeing it. It was at this point that Sasuke saw the Mangekyou Sharingan for the first time.

When Sasuke came back from Shuriken training a few months later, he found all members of the Uchiha clan dead. Shortly afterwards he also saw his parents and Itachi. Itachi was still alive and Sasuke asked confused what had happened. Itachi did not answer, but used his Mangekyou Sharingan and showed his little brother with Tsukuyomi how he murdered their parents and also killed the rest of the clan. Sasuke ran away from Itachi in a panic, but was quickly caught up with him. He took the opportunity to ask his brother why he did this. He did not get an answer from Itachi, but only this: Sasuke should fight, train, and get stronger until he - just like Itach - had learned Mangekyou Sharingan, and then come back to him. In the meantime, Sasuke should hate and despise him. Since then, Sasuke only wants to become strong enough to take revenge and kill his brother.

In truth, however, Itachi was commissioned by Konoha's village elders to kill the members of the Uchiha clan.
The village elders of Konoha suspected that the Uchiha clan was planning to seize power in Konoha in order to escape years of discrimination by the government. This would have led to a new war, which the village elders wanted to prevent with this measure. The masked man, who calls himself Madara Uchiha, helped Itachi in the mass murder. However, Itachi did not have the heart to kill his innocent little brother. Wanting to ensure Sasuke's survival, he told him to take revenge and train hard so that one day he could kill Itachi and retaliate for his murdered family. However, this should only lead to the Uchiha clan regaining prestige, as the last surviving Uchiha would have murdered the renegade Itachi and thus did something good.

Itachi asked Danzou Shimura, who, like Hiruzen Sarutobi and his two advisors, knew about the truth, never to lay hands on Sasuke, otherwise he would reveal all of Konoha's secrets. Itachi asked the third Hokage never to tell Sasuke the truth so as not to destroy his belief in the honor of the Uchiha clan. Itachi then left the village as an outlaw to prepare for the day he would have to fight his little brother.

Time at Akatsuki

After the assassination attempt on the remaining members of the Uchiha clan, Itachi left Konohagakure and sought the Akatsuki organization to join it. There he meets Orochimaru again, whom he cuts off with his left hand after a brief argument because he tried to attack Itachi in order to take over his body. Orochimaru then leaves Akatsuki.
It is also known that Itachi Deidara, whom he outwits in a short fight, wins for the organization, who in turn receives the order to eliminate Orochimaru.
Itachi is assigned to Kisame Hoshigaki, a former member of the Shinobi swordsmen from Kirigakure, as a partner, with whom he receives, among other things, the order to go to Konohagakure and there to fetch the Jinchuuriki of Kyuubi, Naruto Uzumaki.
It is later revealed that Itachi only joined Akatsuki to learn from Madara Uchiha how to get even more power than him to protect Konoha from within.

Battle for Naruto

Once in Konohagakure, Itachi and Kisame Hoshigaki were intercepted by Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuuhi. There was a fight between the four Shinobis. However, when things looked bad for Asuma and Kurenai, Kakashi emerged as a savior and took over the fight against Itachi. Itachi used his Mangekyou Sharingan and wanted to catch Kakashi, Asuma and Kurenai in a gene jutsu. However, he only succeeded in doing this with Kakashi, as he saw through the technology with the help of his Sharingan and warned others not to look into Itachi's eyes. However, Kakashi himself looked Itachi in the eye with his Sharingan and was caught in Itachi's gene jutsu.
Unlike normal gene jutsu, a gene jutsu created by the Mangekyou Sharingan cannot be dissolved by the victim. Itachi used Tsukuyomi to torture Kakashi for 72 hours. In gene jutsu, Kakashi was handcuffed to a stake and Itachi and his clones stabbed him with a sword for 72 hours. In the real world, this happened within a few seconds. Kakashi was then not really wounded, but mentally totally exhausted and lost consciousness. When Itachi and Kisame heard from Kakashi that he knew about Akatsuki, they wanted to take him with them, but Maito Gai was able to drive them away for the time being. Itachi and Kisame then pursued Naruto and Jiraiya, who were looking for Tsunade, to make her the next Hokage. Itachi knew that if they were to fight Jiraiya, they had little chance of taking Naruto with them. So Itachi put a beautiful woman under a gene jutsu. This woman lured Jiraiya away from Naruto, so that Itachi and Kisame had an easy time kidnapping Naruto. However, they got in the way of Sasuke, who insisted on a fight against Itachi. However, Itachi was superior to his brother and used his Mangekyou Sharingan to knock him out. Just before they could take Naruto with them, Jiraiya arrived in time to protect Naruto. Since Jiraiya is very strong and Itachi was already using the Mangekyou Sharingan too often, the two of them withdrew from Akatsuki.

Itachi in Naruto Shippuden

Itachi reappears for the first time in Naruto Shippuuden when he stops Kakashi Hatake, Sakura Haruno, Chiyo and Naruto Uzumaki so that they cannot prevent the extraction of the bijuus from Gaara. The real Itachi, however, hid himself far away from the fighting and used a technique in which he gave 30% of his chakra to another and this thereby assumed the shape and abilities of Itachi.
The "false Itachi" used Naruto's guilty conscience in Gen-Jutsu, that he had not saved Sasuke, thereby disappointed Kakashi, as well as had not kept the promise to Sakura and that there was a possibility that he was also unable, Gaara perhaps no longer to be able to save against him. Naruto was freed from the gene jutsu and with the help of Kakashi was able to defeat the fake Itachi with the Oodama Rasengan. After this fight, Itachi did not show up for a while until he and Kisame took the Yonbi's jinchuuriki to Akatsuki headquarters to remove the bijuu from him. However, nothing further is reported about the fight between the three. Kisame simply said that this Jinchuuriki used many techniques even though he was so old.

Itachi as the main target

After Sasuke defeated Uchiha Orochimaru, he set up a small elite group called Team Hebi to hunt and kill Itachi. Konohagakure found out about Sasuke's plan and therefore started to send a group consisting of Kakashi, Sakura, Sai, Yamato, Naruto, Shino Aburame, Kiba Inuzuka with his dog Akamaru and Hinata Hyuugan to find and kill Itachi. With that they would also find Sasuke, whom they want to bring back to Konohagakure. Both groups have Itachi as their main target to kill him, but Akatsuki has also got wind of this plan, and so Pain has issued the order that Sasuke must be prevented from getting too close to Itachi, since it is too important for Akatsuki.

After a while, Itachi seeks out Naruto, who, after talking about Naruto trying to protect both Konohagakure and Sasuke, gives him some strength and leaves.
Sasuke later finds Itachi. A fight ensues, with Itachi suddenly dying after a tough fight shortly before his victory over Sasuke. Tobi later tells Sasuke that Itachi intended to die at Sasuke's hand from the start and that he had long been marked by a serious illness.

In this last encounter with his younger brother, Itachi transferred all of his eye techniques to Sasuke, so that he is now also in the possession of the Mangekyou Sharingan. As Tobi Sasuke later explains, Itachi was always careful to protect his younger brother; the transfer of all of his dou-jutsus to Sasuke was an attempt to keep Tobi away from him. Tobi also explains that Itachi was only targeted by Sasuke through an assignment from Konohagakure. Itachi was supposed to kill all Uchihas because they were planning a revolution at that time and wanted to subdue Konoha.

Tobi tells Sasuke that his brother was with the ANBUs to inform the Uchiha clan about what the Konoha government was planning. In reality, however, the opposite was the case and Itachi reported everything about the plans of the Uchiha clan to the third Hokage. Tobi tells that Itachi had to witness a terrible battle scene from the third Shinobi World War at the age of four and that this triggered a trauma in him that made Itachi hate war and violence and was always anxious to make peace. Which is why he decided to exterminate the Uchiha clan with Tobi. Therefore, Itachi did everything possible to make Sasuke believe that the Uchiha clan was the pride of Konoha and that what he had done was out of sheer malice. He made Sasuke's life a search for power and revenge to make him stronger and thus protect him from the Konoha government.

With all these facts Sasuke is confronted within a few moments, which leads to Sasuke slowly falling into madness and denigrating Tobi as a liar. Then Tobi throws Sasuke against the fact that Sasuke would not have had a chance against Itachi if he had really wanted to kill him. Furthermore, Tobi says that Before his death and even after his death, Itachi only tried to protect his little brother and give him more strength. Itachi had also intended that Sasuke would be accepted by the village and celebrated as a hero once Sasuke defeated him.

That all of this was revealed to Sasuke was not at all Itachi's intention. Itachi has always been absolutely loyal to Konoha and wanted peace for his homeland. That Sasuke now feels a deep hatred for Konoha because of this knowledge, since Sasuke thinks Konoha has ruined his whole life, was not Itachi's intention.
