Beach resorts & beach vacations
The Algarve is the most popular holiday region in Portugal. Sand Algarve or Rock Algarve? Or maybe even to the rough west coast? The region in the south of Portugal offers vacation spots for every taste.
These vacation spots in the Algarve are our favorites:
The old port city of Lagos is the most famous city in the Algarve. The great beaches with the famous rock formations and the lively old town make Lagos a popular holiday destination
Vilamoura is a classic vacation spot that wasn't designed until the 1980s. Especially as a golfer you will feel at home here. No less than 18 golf courses are available in and around Vilamoura. There is also the largest selection of luxury hotels in the Algarve.
Olhão is a lively coastal town with an important fishing port. Those who like fresh fish will love it in Olhão. There are great beaches on the islands of Ilha da Armona and Ilha da Culatra.
Most holidaymakers in Portugal land in Faro, but only very few stay in Faro. Small town is definitely worth a visit. The pretty old town and a trip to the Rio Formosa lagoon with numerous beautiful sandy beaches are just two arguments for a holiday in Faro.
Tavira used to be the center of tuna fishing, today the small town is a popular holiday destination in the sandy Algarve. The river bed of the Rio Gilão gives the city a very special flair. Some even speak of "Little Venice". There is a very nice beach on the Ilha de Tavira, 2 km away.
Silves is the most beautiful place in the hinterland of the Algarve. It used to be the capital of the Moors. In spring you can be enchanted by the almond blossom.
We'll tell you about other travel destinations in the article »The most beautiful vacation spots in the Algarve«.
Culture & sightseeing
The Portuguese capital is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Europe. Located at the mouth of the Tejo, Lisbon inspires with a mix of modern and historical architecture, friendly people, excellent gastronomy and a spectacular nightlife.
The second largest city in the country is located in the north of Portugal. For a long time in the shadow of Lisbon, Porto is now one of the hottest destinations for a city break. Numerous sights, a stunning old town and of course the port wine from here attract more tourists to the city every year.
Coimbra is a student city in the heart of Portugal. The old university alone with its unique library is worth a visit in the city.
Madeira & Azores islands
Madeira and the islands of the Azores lie in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and are a paradise especially for nature lovers. The beauty of the islands is simply indescribable and if you haven't been able to experience it yourself, you should set off as soon as possible.
Madeira is often referred to as the flower island or the island of eternal spring. Both are true. Both the indescribably beautiful nature and the wonderfully mild climate ensure an unforgettable stay. Madeira is also one of the most beautiful holiday destinations for hikers.
The Azores archipelago is even further in the Atlantic than Madeira and the landscapes here are even more spectacular. Island hopping is a great way to see the highlights. Crater lakes, lava beaches and cliffs are just a few popular destinations. The Azores are a great destination for hiking, mountain biking, surfing, sailing and golfing.
Nature & Adventure
If you are looking for nature in Portugal, you don't have to fly straight to Madeira or the Azores. The Portuguese mainland also has a lot to offer.
In northern Portugal, the only national park in the country, the Peneda-Gerês, is waiting to be explored. On extensive hiking tours you can let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the region.
A completely different landscape awaits you in the Alentejo. The wide landscape of cornfields and wineries is perfect for those looking for peace and quiet. The small town of Évora is the ideal vacation spot to get acquainted with the history and culture of the area.
As you can see, Portugal has great vacation spots and travel destinations to suit all tastes. The best thing to do is to explore as many parts of the country as possible. After that, you can still decide where you like it most.
