Since the end of 2016, Cyanogenmod has been called LineageOS. We tried the alternative Android on the Nexus 5. Download links to current versions of CM14.1 or LineageOS 14.1 can be found at the bottom of the article.

To install CM14.1 or LineageOS 14.1, proceed as with any other custom ROM: First of all, you need admin rights on your phone in order to be able to install a recovery module such as TWRP there. You can then use this module to install LineageOS 14.1 and the Google Apps. Before doing this, however, you should back up all data on your mobile phone. If the installation fails, you will find help in rescuing your system in this article. The installation of custom ROMs is always at your own risk.

Android 7.1 / LineageOS 14.1: split screen

With multi-window support, up to two apps can be displayed and used on the screen at the same time. To use the function, for example, tap and hold on a preview window in the window manager and slide it to the top of the screen. You can change the proportions of the two windows by moving the contact line. However, the app developers must define the multi-window function and the corresponding permitted sizes in their app code. So it doesn't work with all apps yet. To let one of the two apps run in full screen again, simply move the touch lines all the way up or down.

The split-screen view is also cleverly solved if you have to enter something in one of the two windows using the on-screen keyboard. In this case, the windows move upwards in such a way that the window in which you enter something remains in the visible area in any case. You can also move text from one window to the other, for example. However, that doesn't work with every app either.

If you tap the home button in split-screen mode, your home screen appears in full screen, but you are still in multi-screen mode. This means that when you start a new app or tap on the window manager icon (rectangle / s in the navigation bar at the bottom right) the split screen opens again.

Android 7.1 / LineageOS 14.1: Quick-Switch

With the new Android, you can jump into your two most recently used apps at any time, all you have to do is tap the window manager twice in quick succession. Another double tap on it then opens the second app directly. This also works in the split-screen view.

Android 7.1 / LineageOS 14.1: Notifications

The display and functionality of system or app notifications has also been improved. For example, the new notification elements can be grouped in a flat design, and you can use new interaction options, for example, to reply directly from an SMS notification.

EnlargeLineageOS-14 notifications are significantly more interactive than they used to be. For example, you can reply directly from notifications.

Of course, you can still wipe off notifications and define in the system how many notifications should be displayed on the lock screen. You can also prioritize notification types by tapping them for a long time. There are three levels - "Show without sound", "Disable do not disturb" or the normal display.

Android 7.1 / LineageOS 14.1: System UI Tuner

The powerful control center is back in the new Android. Here you can configure the status bar and the navigation bar, for example. But also activate advanced notification functions. To activate System Ui Tuner, swipe down twice from the top of the screen until the Quick Settings appear. Then long tap on the gear icon in the upper right corner. After a few seconds, Android will inform you that the System UI Tuner is now available in Settings.

Android 7.1 / LineageOS 14.1: Quick Settings

The quick access to certain system functions has been improved in Android 7 (and CM14). If you swipe down from the top of the screen, five function icons will appear. If you swipe down one more time, more will appear. With "Edit" you can then change the arrangement of the symbols and put the ones that are most important to you in the top five. On the other hand, you can also add or remove other functions.

What is also new is that the symbols not only work in binary form - i.e. switch them on and off - but also that some additional options are displayed directly in the Quick Settings.

Android 7.1 / LineageOS 14.1: multilingualism

The new language switch is very practical for users who often communicate in different languages. If you have entered several languages in the settings under "Languages & input", you can then switch between the languages with a tap on the on-screen keyboard.

The new Android offers a variety of other small improvements. Nightly versions of CM14 and CM14.1 can currently be downloaded. These are fairly stable systems, but they can still contain one or two errors. Here is the list of the currently available official downloads:
