The South Korean K-Pop band BTS appears in the Ideas Review

After two music projects had already reached the magic threshold at the end of the last review period, the "BTS Dynamite" design is following today with the support of 10,000 fans. Starting in September, the Ideas team will examine the seventh idea of the current round for a possible implementation. We have already looked at the details for you.

The building idea comes from Ideas user JBBrickFanatic aka Josh, who registered about three years ago and developed his first creative activity about a year ago when he took part in an Ideas contest. This year, more contest projects followed, and at the same time he submitted the first three Ideas drafts to the race. Until last Friday, however, no proposal had received more than 300 votes. That changed suddenly when the current draft was discussed on Reddit and caught the attention of some Facebook groups. The result: within four days, the proposal won more than 9,500 votes and was ultimately down to a total 30 days elected to the review.

Let's take a closer look at the design, which is a cooperation between JBBrickFanatic and BangtanBricks. With their project, the two realized some of the venues for the official music video "Dynamite" by the South Korean K-Pop band BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan). In it, the seven band members sing among other things in a record shop, in front of a donut store and a disco. According to the plans of the two designers, each band member is given a figure so that we 7 minifigures find.

Judging by the pictures, the donut facade should measure 14 × 22 knobs and has neither an interior nor a roof structure. Only the donut ring suggests what the building might be.

In the background of the main picture we are shown the entrance to the disco, whose dimensions we estimate on the basis of the pictures to be about 34 × 12 knobs (width x height). This is probably a pure facade that should only be a few knobs deep. We cannot make any further statements due to the lack of views. The writing “Disco” was probably placed digitally, because references to construction techniques or sticker borders cannot be seen in the picture.

The third building is a record shop with the band's single cover on a 2 × 2 tile in the shop window. The shop itself has a facility in which you can display your own tiles in the built-in drawers, for example. However, we noticed one blemish: the shop window tiles either seem to float or look stuck on. As with the disco facade, the lettering on the store sign and on the shop window was very likely created digitally. We estimate the space required by the panel store to be 24 × 16 studs (width x depth).

According to the description text, you can freely connect the three individual components with each other, so that the arrangement can be determined flexibly. With regard to the number of parts used, according to the designer duo, we learn that for the presentation, about 700 parts come into use.

BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan is a South Korean K-pop band that, according to Wikipedia, was founded in 2013. The band's debut album caused quite a stir and was awarded many prizes. With their second album, the popularity rose rapidly and gave the act concerts in front of 25,000 spectators. In September 2016 the second Japanese album “Youth” reached the top spot in the Japanese charts.

At the beginning of 2018 the big international breakthrough came: The band received the “Top Social Artist” award at the Billboard Music Awards in spring 2018 and was even honored in autumn of the same year by South Korean President Moon Jae-in for their extraordinary contribution to Korean culture and its culture Retransmission excellent.

The act now also holds the record for the most successful YouTube upload: No other music group received more views within 24 hours of the publication of a music track. The song “Dynamite” has already been clicked more than 1 billion times on YouTube.

These ideas are already in the 2nd review in 2021:

I try to be benevolent towards every idea. After all, a lot of passion, commitment and time go into every design. That alone deserves a look beyond one's own nose and to explore new subject areas. For me, this is one of the main reasons why I like Ideas so much. In the present case, to be honest, all of this is very difficult for me. In my opinion, almost nothing is right here. The individual components seem completely careless and empty, all lettering was created purely digitally and the donut shop is, in my opinion, a great structural disappointment.

The proposal was uploaded on April 17th and didn't even get 100 votes in the first four weeks. It was only through posting on Reddit and some Facebook groups that rapid dissemination was made possible, which, however, in my opinion does not appreciate the construction idea, but represents a pure merch idea.

But now we come to the question of how LEGO could classify the idea. To do this, let's take a look at the past of Ideas: In the third review in 2015, the “Yellow Submarine” idea made it into the selection round, was selected for production by LEGO in the summer of 2016 and was on the shelves as LEGO Ideas 21306 Yellow Submarine until the end of 2017. In addition, we find two Queen designs, which, however, were rejected in the 3rd Review 2019 and 1st Review 2020. A suggestion for the band "My Chemical Romance" is currently being reviewed, but we do not expect the result to be before autumn 2021. It is not easy to infer a trend from this information.

There is no doubt that the band BTS has had great successes that are really impressive and would probably appeal to a whole new target group. We can also understand this from the Ideas comments: The support comes from many new user accounts that have only existed for a few days. On the other hand, the question is whether LEGO would like to become a merch provider for active artists. While the argument of historical significance can still be used with the Beatles, in this case it would be a support of an active music act. So we can be curious to see how LEGO will decide.

With Ideas, the design idea is in the foreground, so that some structural deficits can be remedied in the revision. However, the Ideas test criteria also provide for a good presentation and a coherent concept. As already mentioned, I see serious shortcomings in the present case.

So I come to the conclusion that, although the group is very successful, LEGO does not want to make itself a merch producer. In my opinion, the design deficiencies are so great that I see no chance of implementation and consider a production release to be very unlikely.

How do you like the idea? Are you fans of BTS or are you not yet familiar with the band? Do you think the design is successful or does the scene seem lifeless to you? Would you generally buy LEGO sets from your favorite bands or is the music enough for you? What chances of implementation do you give the draft? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments.
