What online academic writing jobs are legitimate

Ghostwriting vs. support

1. When can I get help with a job and when is it ghostwriting?

Whether it is a seminar paper, a thesis or a doctorate - anyone who submits a text as an examination performance automatically claims that they have carried out the scientific work behind it themselves and independently and only used the sources that they cite. The affidavit that universities require in many cases underscores this fact by making it explicit. Ghostwriting is therefore a violation of the examination regulations.

It is therefore definitely worthwhile to deal with the principles of good scientific practice at an early stage. If your university does not make any corresponding offers, you can do it yourself (see also the helpful articles on Students online). And there are also offers from universities in matters of writing advice. Nevertheless, the question arises again and again as to which and how much help you can use when creating scientific papers.

Exchange with professors and fellow students

It is clear and unproblematic that the scientific community can have had an influence on this work. So, for example, you can incorporate ideas from seminar discussions, doctoral colloquia or consultations with professors without question. In the case of cumulative doctorates, it may also be the case that services that were created by several authors are included. Group services are also conceivable for theses and seminar papers. It does not always have to be clearly marked who was responsible for which part of the work.

Whether this is necessary or not can be found in the respective module description for course-related achievements, in the examination regulations for examinations and in the doctoral regulations for doctorates. “The exchange is part of scientific work. It is always important that it is the scientific knowledge of the author. This also makes it clear that no authors may only be named on account of honor or the like, ”says Henning Rockmann from the University Rectors' Conference (HRK).

Ghostwriting and proofreading - extreme cases

Unless it's group work like this, nobody but you should pick up a pen. So writing is definitely reserved for you as the author. Therefore, it is definitely forbidden to submit a work that was written by a ghostwriter. However, ghostwriting per se is not prohibited. The agencies that offer this service often protect themselves by pointing out in their terms and conditions that the work, for example, only serves as a suggestion and may not be submitted as examinations at universities - although everyone knows that most of them probably do buy for this purpose.

“I work with agencies that place me with the jobs. I don't have anything to do directly with the students, who are probably ultimately my customers. If students output my texts one-to-one as their own work, that is not my responsibility, ”says Wolfgang Klinghammer, who works as an academic ghostwriter. In case of doubt, the person who submitted the examination must pay for the possible consequences. The German University Association (DHV) asked the legislature in 2012 to create a criminal offense of scientific fraud in order to make work more difficult for the relevant service providers in the area of so-called doctoral advice (see press release).

If someone in your circle of acquaintances reads the finished work again and corrects spelling mistakes or adds commas because you can't see the forest for the trees, then no one will turn it around. “Strictly speaking, anyone who sees it that closely would also have to switch off the correction function in Word. That is not the point, that is not the decisive factor in good scientific practice, ”says Rockmann from the HRK.
